It began as an innocuous caper comedy and became a playful icon that never fails to bring a mischievous smile. The Pink Panther. The animated feline then took on a life of his own. And Seiko has now channeled him into its Seiko 5 Sports SKX Series SRPM07 Pink Panther.

The 1963 film featuring the captivating Claudia Cardinale—an unattainable princess who owns the world’s most expensive diamond with a tiny flaw resembling a leaping panther—is now a cinema classic. The plot wasn’t exactly original, nor did the script break new ground... and yet it worked beautifully.

At the last minute, Peter Sellers stepped into the role of the slightly bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau, transforming the character through his innate comic talent. What began as a supporting part became the central figure, who then took the lead in subsequent sequels.

Beyond the successful Sellers films of the ’60s and ’70s, the concept was revived around the turn of the millennium with a slightly affected version starring Steve Martin. As the mascot of the opening titles, the Pink Panther also sprang to life as a standalone character, notably in animated shorts—one of them being “Pink Phink,” in which the Pink Panther paints Little Man’s house pink, just to spite him.

And it’s this gag that inspires the Seiko 5 Sports Pink Panther limited edition.

The entire dial is painted pink; the tip of the seconds hand and the bezel markers are pink as well. But the Panther left traces—five paw prints that trail across the dial. They lead you to the back of the watch, where he’s hiding. And, just like in the cartoons, only the eyes are visible thanks to perfect camouflage.

A pink crystal in the caseback reveals Seiko’s familiar automatic 4R35 movement with a day-date complication and a power reserve of around 40 hours. As part of the SKX series, the design is classic diver-style. This is the smaller execution, with a diameter of 38 mm. It has become popular not only in classic shades like black or blue, but also in a Tiffany Blue hue. Thanks to the smaller case, it isn’t as bulky and positively invites a playful approach.

And that playfulness comes through perfectly in the limited edition. Alongside the familiar Oyster-style stainless-steel bracelet we know so well from the Seiko 5s, the package includes a spare nylon NATO strap. It tells us which way the Panther made his getaway—and he’s even left a note behind: WET PAINT (fresh paint). Quite the prankster, isn’t he?

The Seiko 5 Pink Panther won’t be for everyone. And not just because it’s a numbered limited edition of 9,999 pieces—pink watches simply aren’t everyone’s thing. Still, this playful vignette from the world of Seiko is worth a look and, given the price, quite possibly worth picking up. What’s more, they’ll come in a themed presentation box shaped like the Little Man’s house.

Availability is expected very soon, but as usual only a few pieces will arrive. And they’ll disappear, I suspect, with the Panther’s trademark swiftness.

So, which Pink Panther film is your favorite? And did you know a new remake is being considered with Eddie Murphy as Inspector Clouseau, in which the Pink Panther would be freed from his cartoon prison?
