I know a lot of people who aren't that good watches watches. For example, my grandmother always asks me: And these people still buy more watches? Is one not enough for them? And they pay so much money for them? Well, Grandma, you know – Better keep quiet about my own collection. But for all who are looking for a simple, reliable watch for a few bucks, there is today's review of the Casio Collection MW-240.

These minimalist Casio watch is pretty popular and so they deserve some more attention and their own review. Is low price the only thing that makes them a hit? Or do they have some seemingly hidden advantages?

What I really dig:

Light, thin

Cheap. Like really cheap

Easy to read

Minimalistic

What to consider before buying:

The plastic glass is prone to scratching

They have a plastic body and a strap made out of plastic, so they may look a bit boring

They don't have luminescence, so you won't see anything at night

The Casio MW-240 is in its essence a brilliant watch. It can do only one thing: show time. But if this feature is actually the only thing you want and need from a watch, you're probably an adept for its new owner. But let's look into them in a little more detail.

First of all, let's admit that this is definitely not a watch for the ball season. You won't make many jaws drop wearing them with a suit. But for a casual wear? When you just want to go out and have a watch that if you scratch it, forget it or lose it somewhere, oh well. You won't break down in tears because of them.

These are exactly the type of watches that keep the more expensive pieces in your watch collection safe. And even more so they are also the type of watch you are looking for when you don't want spend a half of your paycheck.

Casio got rid of everything that is not necessary and stuck only to the basics. Legible, with three minimalistic hands in a black plastic case. And the result? They have been making a decent living for themselves for a few years now...

But enough of praise and empty talk, let's see what they are made of. It's actually quite simple. The case is made of synthetic resin – in other words, it is plastic and you can see that it is plastic. You maybe want to say "unfortunately", but that's just the way it is. You can see clear joints on the case and they just have the feeling of plastic. But at least they have a steel case back.

Similarly, there is a strap that feels like plastic to the touch, but pretty is comfortable to wear nonetheless. It isn't a top tier quality silicone and it will certainly seem stiff to many. But for me, it's that cheap standard typical of Casio. Like the plastic buckle. But I appreciate the amount of holes on the strap, that way even if you have a small wrist, the watch will fit just fine. The cutout by the legs is probably a bit of pity, because the universal replacement will not fit perfectly.

The glass is also made out of plastic, which is probably its biggest flaw. Let's not kid ourselves here – the glass has no protection and so the scratches will be adding up. But as the saying goes, nothing is black and white. The plastic compensates for its disadvantage of being easily scratched with its flexibility, lightness and the replacement of the glass with a new one is not so expensive.

However, before you go straight to replacing, I recommend a polishing paste. It works wonders and makes a scratched glass practically new. One day the change is inevitable, though. Of the glass or the watch itself.

Inside, there is a classic battery that you can buy in every electro, so you can most likely handle the exchange at home. By default, it should last about three years, so even paying watchmaker a visit will not be too much of a tragedy. The movement is from Casio, however, the whole watch was assembled in China.

Dimensionally, this watch is somewhat of a men's average. The case measures 44 mm (including the protrusion for the crown, with the crown it is about 45 mm, without the protrusion 42 mm). From lug to log, ie in length, they are 48 mm and they are only 10 mm thin. Judging by the numbers, it is clear that this watch is not all that robust, and due to their thinness and lightness, the watch will adapt to any wrist. As I said, a great watch for everyday wear.

And the design? Very minimalistic. You will actually get what you see in the photos. There is no big surprise happening. I definitely can't write that the processing goes beyond the price tag, or that you will admire the sophistication of the details. You won't. It is simply a simple cheap watch that Casio produces in several variants to suit the taste.

In fact, it's always a bit of a surprise when completely ordinary watches on sale outperform more intriguing (design-wise) pieces. But here, the Casio concept has paid off in every way.

And in my experience, black sells itself. It simply has that kind of sporty and refined style in it. And in the case of the Casio MW-240, the plastic boredom and cheapness are lost thanks to the black finish.

Alternatives?

You will absolutely find a few interesting pieces at a price range of around twenty euros. Some unnamed brands will offer you watches for less, but Casio is one of the proven manufacturers who will offer quality for little money. And it's not just the MW-240.

The entire Casio Collection range is actually based on the idea that watches do not have to cost much to fulfill their purpose. Probably the most typical example is the digital F-91W. But if you would like to stay with analog three-handed, but you are already looking for something a little more elegant, ideally in metal, the most common, which can only be recommended are the MTP-1303.

Recently, a new MTP-E180 with a steel case and trendy shaded dial was released, which is a piece definitely worth exploring. And I can't help but toss in Casio Duro as well – a watch in a purely sports-diving style, which was also worn by Bill Gates.

The whole Collection line is full of such "gems" that are worth taking a look at. Whether it's these retro pieces, or cheaper variants of ProTreks or legendary G-Shocks. For inspiration, I offer the following stunners:

If Casio MW-240 did not catch your eye at first sight, true enchantment will probably not come. But with a calm heart, I can tap into the keyboard that it's a decently made watch for great money, ideal for casual wear.

If you are a fan of simplicity and light weight, MW-240 is just for you. The watch is made of plastic, but thanks to that it is very light and comfortable, you can hardly feel that you have anything on your wrist.
